New Assessment Measures Senior Resident Decision-Making Skills

Surgery residency program directors and senior residents can now use a psychometrically rigorous assessment of clinical decision-making skills to help residents with the transition to practice.

The new ACS Senior Resident Readiness Assessment (ACS SRRA) uses case scenarios to address decision-making, instead of knowledge recall, for complex conditions and complications in the areas of critical care, trauma, surgical oncology, non-oncologic gastrointestinal surgery, general surgery care, and surgical specialties.

Administered to PGY-4 residents, ACS SRRA provides reports that are designed for formative purposes. The results can be used to identify residents’ strengths and develop individualized learning plans for areas that may need further development during the remainder of residency.

Enrollment is underway now through August 1 for the 2025 online assessment. Administration occurs August 18–29.
